Research at the ISVV is carried out at several levels of study, from the test tube to the vineyard.

  • The 'environment' topic particularly concerns the adaptation of vines to climate change and the different vine diseases with the aim of reducing phytosanitary inputs.
  • The 'typicity and quality of wine' topic specifies the chemical and sensory determinants that contribute to making a unique wine that is recognized for its typicity and its oenological quality.
  • The 'markets' topic covers different socio-economic, historical and territorial aspects with a view to improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the wine sector.

This fundamental high-level research is promoted through numerous contacts with the winemaking profession, teaching and technology transfers.

The ISVV hosts transfer units which contribute to these transfers, and the Inno’Vin cluster acts as a link between key players in the winemaking ecosystem and the ISVV's laboratories.

The ISVV's research teams belong to laboratories based in the ISVV building and on the INRA campus at Villenave d’Ornon, or off-site laboratories that also develop other research activities.
From the methodological perspective, the range of approaches and techniques used by the researchers is at the cutting edge of technology in numerous fields: agronomics, ecophysiology, microbiology, epidemiology and population studies, chemistry and biochemistry, molecular biology, cytology, sensory analyses and statistical studies, etc.

Vineyard tests are carried out under controlled conditions, including in collaboration with the INRA Winemaking Teaching Unit .
This work leads to multiple collaborations and academic and socio-professional exchanges at the local, national and international levels with the major wine-producing countries, in both research and education.

The ISVV is the coordinator of the Oenoviti international network that brings together the major international stakeholders in oenology/viticulture.

The ISVV hosts the international journal Oeno One which replaces the Journal International des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin on an open-access basis.
