During her PhD, Silvia Vezzulli studied the genetic factors responsible for stilbene production in different grapevine organs. In her post-doctoral work, she focused on molecular marker development, linkage analysis, and association studies. As part of the Grapevine Genome Sequencing project, she investigated the grape genome structure, with a special emphasis on transposable elements. She later concentrated on the molecular characterization of grapevine somatic variants and clones. She is a co-author of several impact factor papers, book chapters, and popular press articles, and is a co-inventor of the NoPv1 patent. She serves as a reviewer for various scientific journals and supervises bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students. She holds two national teaching qualifications (ASN) as Full and Associate Professor in “Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Genetics, and Pedology” (2021–2030). She has coordinated major projects, including GrAptaResistance (co-PI, national), Vitisana (PI, international), and currently serves as the FEM scientific referee for the PNRR Agritech project (national).


Currently, Silvia Vezzulli studies the genetics of disease resistance to support marker-assisted breeding in grapevine, with a focus on downy mildew, powdery mildew, and black rot. Given her interest in new genetic material—particularly wild species—she adopts innovative strategies from both genotyping and phenotyping perspectives. Her research interests include breeding and genetics, structural genomics, molecular biology, plant-pathogen interactions, and botany. Her work is grounded in applicability, networking, and foresight.
