In 2005, Joseph Schacherer obtained his PhD in molecular and cellular biology from the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg (France). He then joined Leonid Kruglyak’s team at the Lewis Sigler Institute at Princeton University (New Jersey, USA), where he began to take an interest in population genomics and intraspecific phenotypic diversity. In 2007, he was appointed senior lecturer and conducted his research in the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, Genomics and Microbiology (UMR7156, University of Strasbourg – CNRS). In 2013, he established his own research group, bringing together researchers with expertise in population genomics, genetics, bioinformatics and data analysis – all of which are essential for the generation and analysis of high-throughput sequencing and phenotyping data. The group’s long-term objective is to use functional and population genomics to gain a better understanding of the rules governing the genotype-phenotype relationship within a species.

Joseph Schacherer has also been awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grant on two occasions, in 2012 and 2017. He also led the 1,002 Yeast Genomes project. He was appointed a member of the Institut universitaire de France in 2016. Since September 2017, he has been Professor of Genetics and Genomics at the University of Strasbourg.
